Ercall Wood Academy

Empower | Respect | Aspire

Here at Ercall Wood Academy we enter all students for examinations in which we expect them to succeed. The four main exam boards are:

These web sites are well worth a visit. They have sections for parents/carers to view.

The boards write specifications (these used to be called “syllabuses”), set and mark examination papers then grant qualifications, with letter grades, based on how well your child performed, finally printing certificates as proof of the qualification.

Which board and which specification are choices for the heads of department at the school to make, based upon subject content, administration etc. No one board is any ‘harder’ than the others but some may be better suited to our students’ abilities. All specifications from different boards must meet similar requirements. The JCQ (Joint Council for Qualifications, is another useful resource and has publications directed at parents/carers.

Examinations fall mainly in the summer, mid-May to the end of June, but some also take place at other times, January being the next most common time.  Coursework / Controlled Assessments may be set in the school at any time but must be completed before a date set by the board.

The results of the summer examinations are sent to the school on ‘Results day’ which for GCSE is the Thursday before August Bank Holiday Monday. Results are confidential to the students so we do not give out information about results over the phone or by e-mail. A nominated adult may collect results on behalf of a student provided that we have written evidence of this arrangement and proof of identity.

GCSE Certificates
In the future you might need your GCSE certificates for job applications or/university interviews. If you have lost or misplaced them you will need replacements. Some awarding bodies will only offer replacement statement of results but this is sufficient for interview purposes.

All awarding bodies have a section on their websites about replacement certificates/statements. Go to the home page and follow the links. The awarding bodies that Ercall Wood uses are: AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC. The replacements can be over £40 per exam board.

Ercall Wood is only obliged to keep certificates for one year so please, please collect your certificates whilst they are still in school.
