Ercall Wood Academy
We are pleased to share with you Ercall Wood Academy Careers programme.
Our Careers programme is a very important part of the school curriculum and is delivered cross curricular and throughout the life skills programme. We aim to deliver impartial information and equip pupils with transferable skills to enable our pupils to make informed decisions about their future. It is important that our Careers programme helps raise the aspirations of our young people in regards to employment and access to Further and Higher Education. We want to ensure that all our young people have the opportunity to reach their full potential and become the very best versions of themselves that they can be.
We have strong links with local colleges, sixth forms, universities and employers which enable our careers programme to support students in learning about the understanding of the labour market and the different pathways and progression routes for their future career aspirations.
All Year 11 pupils have careers guidance interviews, with our Future Focus adviser, Mr Andrew Austin. Year 11 pupils will also benefit from a series of assemblies and visits to local colleges and education providers. All year 10 pupils take part in our Futures day, whereby each pupil has guidance and support to produce their CV, an application form and take part in an individual mock interview. Year 10 pupils also have the opportunity, in the summer term, to have part in a work experience programme. Throughout the year pupils have a variety of morning assemblies delivered by local and national providers to show the full range of choices and opportunities available to them.
Key stage 3 and 4 pupils have the opportunity to take part in a range of careers related challenges and competitions throughout the year, including The National Enterprise Challenge, The Young Chef competition, The UK maths Challenge, Young Enterprise.
All pupils attend our annual Careers fair in the Autumn Term which is well attended by sixth forms, colleges, universities, other local education providers, employers and the armed forces. Pupils are also encouraged to take part in open events, taster sessions and university visits at various times throughout the year. In previous years, pupils have visited sixth forms tasters such as Madeley Academy’s “curry in a hurry”, Telford College tasters, University of Wolverhampton, Keele University, Staffordshire University, Harper Adams University, Aston University, University of Birmingham, University of Oxford and even a residential at University of Cambridge.
All Careers and Enterprise events and activities are evaluated by the targeted audience or students participating in the activity/event. Feedback is an important part of the evaluation and measurement of the impact the programme has.
Ercall wood is proud to continue its Business in the Community partnership, with Fujitsu. This partnership is now in its fourth year and continuing to grow each year. Fujitsu has led a variety of Careers enrichment activities, maths challenges and ICT/coding workshops.
Ercall Wood is also proud to be a National Citizenship champion school with a large number of year 11 pupils taking part in the programme every year.
Baker Clause Policy Statement on Provider Access.
This policy statement sets out the school’s arrangements for managing the access of providers to pupils at the school for the purposes of giving them information about the provider’s education or training offer. This complies with the school’s legal obligations under Section 42B of the Education Act 1997.
Ercall Wood Academy uses the Gatsby Benchmarks as a guide to plan our Careers program. As part of our commitment to informing students of the full range of employment, learning and training pathways on offer to them, we are happy to receive requests from FE Colleges, training, apprenticeships, employers and vocational educational providers to speak to students.
All students in years 8 to 11 are entitled to:
• To find out about technical education qualifications and apprenticeships opportunities, as part of a careers program which provides information on the full range of education and training options available at each transition point;
• To hear from a range of local providers about the opportunities they offer, including technical education and apprenticeships – through options events, assemblies and group discussions, provider lead workshops and taster events;
• To understand how to make applications for the full range of academic and technical courses
Management of provider access requests.
Opportunities for access
Our provision includes various opportunities for students to access a range of events. These are mainly integrated into the schools careers programme and curriculum. These events are therefore delivered internally, with contribution from external providers where appropriate.
A provider wishing to request access should contact Miss L Woodhall, Careers Lead, via the school contact details.
Local providers are invited to key relevant events. In addition, external providers interested in coming into school should speak to Miss Woodhall, our named Careers Lead to identify the most suitable opportunity.
The school policy on safeguarding sets out the school’s approach to allowing providers into school as visitors to talk to our students.
Once visits have been agreed, the school will provide appropriate rooming to facilitate the visit, along with any equipment requested by the provider, where it is available. Providers are welcome to leave a copy of their prospectus or other relevant course literature, where it will be made available to students, tutors and careers advisors. Information can be displayed on the Careers section of the school website / plasma screens in school and notice boards.
